SMALL ETERNAL TOWN OF Osor

At the place where the islands of Cres and Lošinj merge, or separate, on the isthmus between Cres and Lošinj, since ancient times there has been a little town Osor. The oldest traces of life from the late Stone Age have been found in caves near Osor. The first fortified settlement was founded by Illyrians. Across the Isthmus of Cres, a natural protection from storms, passed the historical transit line from the Aegean to the Baltic Sea, known as the Amber route. Many decorations of amber are located in the Illyrian graves near Osor.
Later it was an ancient fortress. In the age of old Croatian state it became a center of culture and Glagoliticism. When it came under Venetian rule, it began to lose its importance.
Today we can say that the whole city of Osor is actually an open-air museum where you should not miss the main attractions:

• Kavuada (Cavata, Cavanella), sea passage dug through in the west part of the settlement. It may have been dug during the Iron Age.
• Jaz, the position of the former canal which is now filled up with stones. This was supposedly the place of the liveliest harbour and shipping traffic of Osor.
• The scope of the wall in its range keeps the direction from the Bronze Age.
• The citadel ruins
• The chapel of St Gaudencius
• The bishop’s residence
• The cathedral of Mary’s Assumption: a three-nave building, oriented to north-south, built during bishops Antun Palčić (1463-1470) and Marko Nigris (1481-1484)
• Lions reliefs
• Sculpture park "Sculpture and Music" Bronze statues and reliefs famous Croatian sculptors like Kršinić, Mestrovic, Radauć, Rosandić, Ujević
• Exhibitions of paintings and drawings
• During the summer months Osor becomes a unique scenic area rich in cultural events, among which are Osor Musical Evenings held since 1976
